Denim Guide
Answers and tidbits to all your denim fit questions are answered here. We have put this guide together in hopes that it helps in finding your favorite pair of designer jeans. We have answered a few questions that our clients have asked us over and over again at the shop. We thought they would be just as useful online. The guide is broken out by body type fit. We have then given you our recommendations as to what jeans will work best for that body type. We have also given you a bio of each jean line in-case you would like to know who and what's behind the driving force of your fav brand. This guide is ever changing and to make it better we could use your feedback! Drop us a note at customerservice@thedenimloft.com with your questions or comments. We would love to help make buying denim on the web as easy as possible.
1. Why is designer denim sized 24-32 and not 0-12 like normal pants?
We don't know, but our theory is that some good looking French or Italian guy came up with this idea, and our California counterparts had to keep up with their trend? Who knows...but to find your size, go by your dress size. If you are a size 8 in a dress or pant, you are probably a 29 in jeans. Depending on the amount of stretch and the designer, they can run a little different. You can always shoot us an email or call for specifics on any brand.
2. What's the difference between stretch and non-stretch (rigid) denim?
Most designer denim lines have a little "stretch" to them. ie: 98% cotton and 2% spandex, or lycra, or some other foreign sounding ingredient. The more stretch, the more generous the fit and more reason to size down. Rigid denim (100% cotton or 99% cotton and 1% other) will not stretch out much. It will eventually hug your body in all the right places and last longer than your stretch denim. Rigid denim will also usually run a little smaller. If you do like "stretchy" denim, make sure you size down. Cram you butt into them and remember not to go out of the house for an hour or so. After that, they will fit amazing and stay in place.
3. I have a flat butt and/or wide hips. What jeans fit my shape best?
I personally have both of these problems! Not only flat and wide, but I am short waisted with thicker thighs and to top it off, only 5" 1" tall. Stinks for me, but I have managed to find some fab jeans for my body! Look for jeans with flap pockets that will give you the illusion of a lift. To reduce your hip area, find a pocket with a dart or angled pockets. This will bring in your hips and make you look taller. Always wear some kind of a heel. This does wonders on your backside! If you are tall and under a size 29 with a flat tush, wear a straight or skinny leg. This will make your butt appear higher and more proportionate to your figure. The jeans that I love for this type of figure are:
4. My "lovely lady lump" (or is it rump?)....is big, but my waist is small.
(Think J LO and Beyonce) What jeans work well for me?
Men love booties, but we hate em'. To make your backside appear smaller try jeans with angled pockets or darts. This will create an illusion of a smaller backside. You can also try jeans that have pockets that are smaller and positioned closer together. This will bring in your booty too. A lower rise is a must. In order to compensate for your small waist, you need to wear them lower around the hips so the waistband doesn't gap. Wear a cami tucked in your jeans for added "coverage". Avoid a lot of fading on the butt. Go for darker washes. Choose a boot cut or flare. Jeans to try are:
5. I am 5'10 but a size 26. Most jeans are short on me. What do you suggest?
Gain some weight girl! No, just kidding but obviously you need to look for jeans that come in longer inseams. Designer denim is ridiculously long to begin with in my opinion (most are 33 to 33 1/2" inseams) but these jean lines do have longer inseams or can be special ordered for you.
6. I am petite and short waisted. What jeans work well for my body type?
Try a lower waist jean under 7.5". This will add length to your torso. Straight leg works great for petites. Try jeans with lower positioned pockets to balance you out. Trouser fitting jeans with wider legs will look great on you also. No cuffs though -they will make you look even shorter. Avoid the high-waisted jeans. This will also make your torso appear shorter. Jeans to try:
7. Can you tell me which jeans run small, which run true to size and which run big? They all seem to run differently!
This is only my opinion from fitting hundreds and hundreds of girls at my shop...others may disagree. Designer denim generally runs smaller than "chain store" denim. So, in the designer denim world, I will tell you which ones run small, true to size and larger.

Denim Designer Index

The Denim Loft houses many different designers. We have a sickness for it. We also love to learn about the brain child that designs it and where they are headed. Here's the inside scoop about your favorite designers and their sizing (according to us anyway!) We have taken many of these bio's directly from them.

AG: Adriano Goldschmied
The AG Adriano Goldschmied brand, founded in 2000, partnered long-time denim guru, Adriano Goldschmied, and the industry leader in quality and innovative jean manufacturing, Yul Ku, of Koos Manufacturing in South Gate, CA.

After many years of starting up new brands and creating new ways to replicate vintage jeans, it was time for Adriano to launch the definitive line that would truly represent his longtime vision. He found the ability to do this by partnering up with Koos Manufacturing. Founder Yul Ku was a second-generation jeans maker. After coming to the United States in 1975, Mr. Ku opened his first manufacturing plant with his family in Los Angeles. Shortly afterwards he struck out on his own, initially manufacturing for Calvin Klein Jeans. Over the next 20 years Koos Manufacturing has produced jeans for Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew, A/X Armani Exchange, Polo Ralph Lauren and Lucky Brand, to name a few, all the while keeping high quality, integrity and honesty at the forefront.

Over time, Mr. Ku realized that while he enjoyed manufacturing immensely, the idea of developing his own brand continually beckoned. When Adriano approached him in the spring of 1999 the opportunity presented itself. Starting out as a small boutique line the first couple of years, AG has grown steadily the last four years, doubling its sales in each of the past three years.

In the fall of 2004, Adriano and Mr. Ku mutually decided to end their association, and Adriano left his namesake company to venture out on his own. Mr. Ku, seeing the opportunity to expand upon the AG brand, decided to create a team of innovative and young designers and merchandisers, who would work together in a think tank type of environment. The AG team is dedicated to continued development of the brand with the utmost attention to detail and quality, and a commitment to the made in the U.S.A. label.(Taken from AG website).

Blue Cult
Founded in 1999 by French Designer David Mechaly and partner/wife Caroline Athias, Blue Cult delivers stylish denim with hand rubbed finishes to customers across the globe. Blue Cult is intricately detailed with unique stitching and craftsmanship. It is edge constructed for quality. Even with the stretch, these jeans hold their own. The Kate Buttlifter jean was voted number one in the fashion magazines for it's lift.
Blue Tattoo
Created in 2002, this line of contemporary denim and tattoo inspired ready to wear has taken the fashion world by surprise! The jeans have the best stitch details. It is the one of the best fitting jeans I have seen. The tops are made of great cotton and the graphics are amazing.
Diesel
"For Successful Living" is this Italian's motto! Founded by Renzo Rosso in 1978, he wanted to be a leader and a company that took chances and would carve a niche for itself in it's field. He has done just that by creating fashion trends instead of following them. The attention to unexpected details and great graphics have given this line a huge following!
David Kahn Jeanswear
Founded over 35 years ago and one of the first Pioneers in Designer Denim, David Kahn has standed the tests of time. Made from great Japanese denim here in the states, he continues to add great fits for the slightly missy customer. Focusing on a little higher of a rise, but a great designer fit. The washes are beautiful too!
Earnest Sewn
Earnest Sewn, by definition, is a denim brand which pays homage to its Americana past and mixes, for perhaps the first time, traditional denim workwear with the ancient Japanese style aesthetic, Wabi-Sabi. Designed by Scott Morrison, formerly the designer/co-founder of Paper Denim & Cloth.

Focusing on each individual jean and the numerous amounts of processing, hand application, and refinishing techniques used to create an Earnest Sewn jean, we takes things even further by intentionally incorporating imperfection and inconsistency into key design and sewing details. This is exhibited in irregularities such as stitch detailing, needlework, sewing construction, trims, thread variation, and our ever changing 'e & s' back pocket stitching. Fidelity Denim
Founder, designer, and president with the responsibility of creative direction and vision for FIDELITY, Jason Trotzuk strategically takes his insights from concept to creation when designing FIDELITY. A denim lover at heart, Trotzuk combines his love for fashion, rock n' roll, and classic American blue jeans, and applies it toward his passion, denim design. . Trotzuk decided to create his own concept premium denim brand and recognized what women wanted in their jeans: great fabric, finishes, and fit and with those elements they would be loyal, trusting, and devoted customers. Trotzuk saw his supporters and clientele who believed in him and loved his work. He had always had that bond with his customers, and he saw that there was fidelity between them. The concept for Trotzuk's new brand was easy for him to see: FIDELITY.
Frankie B
'How low can you go?' someone once asked. 'How low can you afford?' came the reply. In business, as in life, some prefer the high road and some prefer the low. Frankie B. owner and designer Daniella Clarke chose the latter with her low-rise, trendsetting jeans and built a fashion empire based on denim and the humble butt-crack. But, while backdoor cleavage may have been the beginning of Frankie B., it certainly won't be its end. Married to rock guitarist Gilby Clarke, and mother of daughter Frankie, the titular inspiration behind her Frankie B. logo, Daniella Clarke starting cutting the waistbands off of her jeans when she was still a teenager. Then, rock and roll style was confined mainly to rock musicians and high-school students: but the trinity of 'sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll' has since been amended. Fashion is the world's new addiction, and in Frankie B. Clarke has created a lifestyle collection that brings rock and roll chic to the masses. The original impetus for Frankie B-the mustard seed that became a mighty corporate tree-occurred when Clarke returned home from four years on the road with her musician husband. Taking her cue from the rock-hippie style of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Clarke began working from her garage, starting initially with a line of sexy, low-slung, boot cut denim jeans named after her main source of inspiration, daughter Frankie. 575 Denim
575 Denim is a vintage inspired denim line designed by the creator of the old Sacred Blue and Blue Cult line. Designer Frank Mechaly redefines the distressed look of premium denim and brings them to life with distinctive detailing and innovative washes. 575 Denim is created and produced in a forty thousand square foot warehouse downtown LA. Each pair is hand sewn, sanded and washed. 575 Denim has become a fav among many Hollywood celebrities, fashion magazines and stylists. It's a favorite of Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Felicity Huffman. It was featured as one of the top four jeans for celebrities during the Sundance Film Fesitival 2006 by Hollywood Life Magazine. Genetic Denim
Just as genes are the fundamental element of our makeup, jeans are an essential component of our wardrobes. Both are responsible for setting us apart from the crowd and shaping how we appear to the outside world.

It is these two parallel ideas that make up Genetic Denim, jeans that combines trend and individuality. A denim brand that seeks to present each person with the best possible fit for their body type, accentuating assets, rather than forcing everyone into the same mold.

Founders, Ali FAtourechi, Scott Sartiano and Shaun Hurley, share the same passion, yet use their individual strengths to drive Genetic Denim's success. By combining Fatourechi's vision with Hurley's knowledge of the denim market, and Sartiano's marketing background, Genetic Denim celebrated its one-year anniversary by adding fashion styles, including skirts, capris, leggings and an array of new washes for their men's and women's basic jeans. The line's staples, the Recessive Gene, the Dominant Gene and the Mutated Gene, will continue to be produced in a variety of washes. If you love 575 Denim, you should be sold on Genetic Denim. After founding 575 Denim, Shaun Hurley left to pursue Genetic Denim.
